Urad dal payasam is a traditional recipe of South India. This payasam is not a modern day food but the ingredients will tell the heritage of Indian cooking. This drink is definitely an energy booster especially for girls and growing kids.
For Urad dal payasam, I have dry roast the urad dal and make a fine powder and store it in a glass jar. You can use it whenever you want. Or opt for the pressure cook one , in that case you have soak the urad dal overnight. Jaggery is added for sweetness when it melts the aroma will be so good. While having payasam added fresh grated coconut tastes so good. We can consume it wen it’s warm or serve chilled.

Ingredients:
Urad dal - 1/2 cup
Rice - 2 tbsp
Jaggery- 1 1/2 cup
Elachi powder- 1 tsp
Grated Coconut - 3 tbsp
Cashew- 10 nos
Dry grapes- 10 nos
Ghee- 2 tbsp
Preparation:
1. Dry roast Urad dal and rice , allow it to cool.. Make a fine powder using blender.keep it aside
2. In a pan, add ghee den roast cashew , dry grapes and coconut. Keep it aside.
3. In a thick bottomed pan ,Melt the jaggery with 1 cup of water to remove any sediments and strain it.
4. Meanwhile Dilute the urad dal powder with 1 cup of water and keep it ready
5. In a pan , add 4 cups of water and when it comes to boil , add the diluted urad dal into it.
6. Keep on stirring to avoid any lumps and let it boil till you notice the glossy texture.
7. Now add cardamom powder and jaggery syrup. Mix well till it combines together
8. Finally add the roasted nuts and garnish !!!
